You can find updated python script for visualization of gmesh pos files. It should be faster, it uses less memory and new Blender Python API of Blender 2.43, btw: It uses simple GUI. Keep in mind: it is WIP. gmesh_visualizer.py

I guess, that everybody has noticed, that new version of Blender was released. It seems, that some bug fix release will be neccessary soon. It will go out probably in Sunday and after this date ... verse blender will go to main cvs tree. Finaly! :-) I still have to improved, fixed and implemented many things. :-(

Scientific visualization in Blender

I just have to do visualisation of some data from scientific simulation (flowing of fluids) for our dean. I do it in Blender. I have to work with some data for GMSH. It's open source visualiser, but it is limited in several ways. For example, you can't create any nice looking animation ;-). I had to write some python import scripts: msh_import.py and pos_import.py. I'm able to import geometry, materials and scalar/vector data from simulation now.

It seems, that SGI is definitely dead. It's pity, because this firm has produced cool workstations. I can proudly say, that I had chance to work with SGI O2, ONYX2 and Origin workstations/servers

Bankruptcy of SGI could be problem for some 3rd parties, for example for Autodesk(Discreet) and Linux. Why? Autodesk produces hi-end applications running at IRIX. Development of NUMA and XFS has been widely supported by SGI.

New render engine is in orange CVS now. It still doesn't work correctly at 64bit systems, but it rocks at 32bit systems. Look at screenshot, 3D preview rendering, post render compositor, etc.

Verse Gimp in CVS

Verse Gimp is in CVS and it has official site at projects.blender.org. Me and Brecht has cvs write access to this repository. I will try to commit some changes there as well to verse-blender repository and try to make verse-blender-gimp working as soon as possible ;-). On the other site Toni from Orange Team has quite bad resuts from benchmark tests of Verse and Verse Gimp. Verse and Verse Gimp has problems with huge image data ... it is too slow now :-(. Be patient! I will send here much more information when report from testing will be ready.

KB is hell

Komerční banka is the worst bank in Czech Republic. It has the worts internet banking system in the world! It can run only in IE (it uses ActiveX), but it is only theory. It usualy doesn't work in any web browser. It sucks! Avoid of KB!

I would never use it, but rest of my family think, that it is very good bank ... grrrr. I will have to emigrate to Switzerland ;-).

Verse-Gimp & Verse-Blender

I will focus at implementation of verse bitmap node to Verse-Blender now. It means, that Blender will be able to share images with some other verse app, for example with Verse-Gimp. Yes, you will be able to edit your textures in Gimp and see changes in real time in Blender. Brecht did something similar in past, but it required big hack in Blender. Verse-Blender is big hack too, but I hope, that not so big hack ;-). I will have to finish it in two weeks, because boys from Orange team want to test it so much ;-).

... I'm in presure now, because I promised, that I will work at Verse-Blender and I do some visualisation for our dean (I have to show some result next week and I have still almost nothing to show). I will have to pass examination next week in friday and I promised, that I will be co-author of czech book about Blender and I promised, that I will work on localisation of Blender to czech language (6 000 string, 40 000 words :-/, hack displaying of text in Blender).

I was at Blender konference in Prag last week and I had two presentation there, because Jan Kurka was sick. You can download my blend files used during my presentation as well as my slides (written in czech language). I also saw Jimmac's cool presenation and I wanted to practise masks in Gimp ... so I created one stupid image (xcf):

Ján Slašťan (alias slange) had the best presentation. This boy come from Slovakia from Košice (it's city on the east side of Slovakia) and he talked about news in Blender animation system. Thanks!

I have to mention, that this day is 16th anniversary of Velvet Revolution. It's so nice to live in freedom, trust me you all!

I visited SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater in Prague yesterday. Everybody could come and saw many nice short movies. I received small gift from PIXEL magazine there too :-). I will become member of Prague ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter next month and I will have chance to visit many interesting presentations (for example: Paul Debevec's presentation) in the future.

Testing build of Verse-Blender was officially realesed during Blender Conference in Amsterdam, where I had presentation about progress of my work. You can also find news at blender.org. I created user documentation for it too. We had very good meeting with other verse developers in Amsterdam during conference, where we have talked about spec., master verse server, etc. BTW: I have very good feedback at verse-server as well at verse at cgsociety.org.

I was at 'small' party at the Faculty of Architecture yesterday (I shouldn't drink so much never more ;-)). It was pretty good, because there are many new students and suprisingly many new students from foreign countries (Portugal, Russia, China, Vietnam, etc.)

I teach 7 lessons per week. Damn! By the way, I'm in different atelier, then last semester. I will post some photos later. It is nice shiny place, but it is impossible to teach anything there (you will see). I will admin almost 30 computers and I will have there more than 50 students :-( (49 new students at viz. kom. and desing). We will have to kick out most of them as soon as possible. If not, then I will escape to some small room next to A3 :-).

Weblog SPAM

I noticed several weblog spam here. What does it mean? After sending new weblog post a received mail notification, that some new comments was added to my weblog. Of course I was curious and I clicked on link. There was usually comment like: 'Your weblog is so cool ... link at my weblog' ... and there was some advertisement. To prevent from this you will have to type some word verification, when you will want to leave me any comment. I hope, that it will not bother you and I hope that I will not have to do some other restrictions in the future.

Firefox 1.5 and SVG

We can expect new version of Firefox very soon and we can download first beta now. Firefox 1.5 will support SVG vector graphics. Firefox 1.5 Beta1 renders SVG quite good, but it still doesn't render .svgz files, it is slow sometimes and it doesn't support specification without problems :-(. What about benefits? It uses Cairo library ... so, we can look forward at hardware acceleration of rendering in the future. I also found very good pages about SVG in HTML containing many examples, tutorials, etc.

Conclusion: download first beta of Firefox 1.5, download Inkscape and create some svg file, read this short tutorial and have a fun! Bye bye, evil flash! *hopefully* :-)

I was at concert of Nukleární Vokurky band in Lucerna Music Bar in the center of Prag. Vokurky celebrated their 10th anniversary of founding and it was really funky show :-). Go Vokurky, go!

Blender usability goodies

Selecting of what screen area will be "kept alive" and what will be destroyed was painful, when user wanted to join two screen areas. It is changed since today. User can interactively select wanted screen area with eyecandy feedback. Look at screenshot.

Experimental UNDO

Undo should work in edit mode in my verse-blender. Ton proposed to resend whole mesh geometry after each undo step, but my solution is more tricky and effective. It sends only different between undo mesh and verse mesh. I fixed one stupid bug and I did cvs merge yesterday. Keep testing! Ehm, undo doesn't work in object mode yet. You can find Linux binaries and source code at usual place.

Blender in PIXEL magazine

Big tutorial about Blender will be printed in PIXEL magazine. PIXEL is the biggest printed magazine about CG in Czech Republic (it has 10k readers per month). Author of this tutorial is Jan Kurka (I had to convince him about write this tutorial ;-) ), but he propably likes writing of blender tutorials and some other tutorials will follow there. Of course, Blender binaries (win and mac osx) will be available at CD sold out with printed magazine. This is nice PR for Blender, isn't it.

I finally implemented visualization of shared mesh object in object mode. You can see changes coming from other users, when shared objects are in object mode. Implementation was quite easy, because Daniel Dunbar created something called derived mesh. Other benefit is, that user can't paint in vertex paint mode as well in texture paint mode or select face in uv face select mode. Why is this good? Because Blender can't share such data yet. You can download testing binaries at usual place.

I implemented several changes in my personal branch. All edit mesh tools should work correctly now. I noticed problems only with Merge and evil Bevel tool. New bike

I bought new bike yesterday from Ghost-bikes. It has nice feature. I can easily lock shock-absorber with switch at handlebar during ride. I will have to buy better pedals and special shoes, but ride is much more better now then with my old bike.

Positron versus DIVA

Small group of developers forked Blender source code and created Positron. It should be the best non-liner video editor in the World ;-). I guess, that it will be somethink like Jahshaka (something "cool", unstable and unusefull for real work). btw: they don't offer source code :-(.

DIVA seems as simple and easy to use video editor written in Mono. It is developed as part of Google Summer of Code 2005. Go Michael, Go! ;-)

I implemented deleting of vertexes and faces. Some tools work very good (for example: extrude), but some tools don't work very good in edit mode yet (knife, subdivide, etc.). I implemented synchronouse sending of vertex position (no flickering during vertex transformation, when user is connected to too far away verse server). I updated linux binaries, source code as well user documentation. Enjoy!

My Integration of Verse to Blender was presented at Siggraph 2005 during Blender BOF session. I don't know any other detail, but it was successful :-)

You can download new Siggraph demo reel (470 MB). You will need some bittorent client, for example Azureus (written in java ... available for win, linux, mac, etc.)

I added support for sending new vertexes and faces to verse server today. There is lot of to do: undo system, deleting vertexes, faces, etc. I will upload linux binaries and source code at usual place later. Matt promised, that he will make testing build for Mac OS X.

Ton created nice statistics showing, that users downloaded 1.8 millions copies of Blender last year. It seems, that everybody use Windows :-/ and Blender is the most popular 3d app in the World (Alias sells only 10 000 copies of Maya per year) ;-).

Outliner as verse node manager

I finaly hacked Blender Outliner today. It can display verse sessions and all object nodes and linked geometry nodes. I created screenshot (PNG picture 1024x768 pixels) as verification of my hard work ;-). I have to add ability to subscribe to foreign verse nodes, unsubscribe from nodes, etc. I hope, that I will have ready basic functionality of verse integration for Siggraph 2005 (end of this week) ... terrible deadline :-/.

Orange (the open movie project)

Project Orange was started. The Blender Foundation and the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts, have agreed on producing a 3D Animated Movie Short, to be created with the Open Source 3D suite Blender and other OS tools such as Yafray, Python, Verse, Gimp, etc.

Better editing of MetaBalls

I improved editting of MetaBalls in edit mode. It is possible to scale radius of MetaElem again. It is possible to change dx, dy and dz params in 3Dview with manipulators or with some shortcuts (S-X, S-Y, S-Z) as well as stiffness. The biggest benefit will be removing several buttons from button window ;-) I created some demo video as usual ;-)

I contributed little bit to this small linux gui app. It is written in python and it use PyGtk module. This app could be useful for creating demo videos. It can indicate, what key was pressed. It is little bit hackish now. User has to have special access file permision for some files in /dev directory or run it as root. I will make some demonstrating videos tomorrow :-).

Humus and OpenGL Shaders

Richard showed me very cool pages about Humus :-) You can find there lot of OpenGL demo apps using new Pixel and Vertex shaders and OpenGL extensions. I can run most of them, because new ATI drivers for Linux support it.

I asked Miroch if he would like to be admin for projects.blender.org pages, because we need some guy for this stuff. I meant my question as joke, but he amazingly answered, why not, it is good idea (his answer wasn't joke) ;-). I'm really curious, if he will do it or not in the future.

I wasn't lazy today and I improved Matt's time markers again. I hope, that all my effort will be useful and it will be available in next Blender realease. It is available in Tuhopuu tree at this moment.

Graduation and PhD. studies

I had graduation in Wednesday and my thesis was awarded with Dean's prize. It means, that I get some prize money ;-). I will continue in PhD. studies at Department of Applied Informatics. Theme of my studies will be computer graphics and theme of my dissertation work will be distributed graphical application. It means, that I will integrate Verse to the Blender.

Better splitting of screen areas

Me, my students and all people consider splitting of windows in Blender as not much handy. I changed it ... usr can interactively choose, what window will be splited. You can try it in tuhopuu. Of course, I captured some short video (300KB) for normal people ;-).

I finished my thesis (0.8MB). It is "internet" version (smaller size, two columns, etc.) and it is written in czech language. Shall I create english version too? ... I don't want to do it, because it is too much work ;-)

Deer modeled with MetaBalls

My friend Vilém Novák sent me this nice model of deer. It is all modeled with MetaBalls in Blender. It is nice demonstration, that MetaBalls can be used for modeling :-)

Transform Refactoring

I created new captured video(0.9MB). It demonstrates new function in tuhopuu. It is result of theeth's transform refactoring => adding new transform functions/features should be much more easier in the future.

I did some small changes in button window. Setting of some parameters of MetaBalls and MetaElems is easier now. It is screenshot from tuhopuu3. This screenshot demonstrates new Matt's theme too.
